Dissertation: Conceptual Scheme Differentiation, University of Calgary, 1991

Abstract: A critical study of the Principle of Charity as a methodological constraint on interpretation, especially as employed by Donald Davidson in his
Inquiries into Truth and Interpretation.
I argue that the requirements of charitable interpretation of speech, thought and behavior do not preclude the discovery of intelligible bases upon which to describe genuine conceptual differences between schemes. Drawing upon anthropological, sociological, religious and historical sources, I argue that adoption of Davidson's proposals may lead to large-scale interpretive error, and that a plurality of interpretive principles weaker than Davidson's are required to guide translation and interpretation.
